Dr Zhou specializes in formulating mathematical models and developing numerical methods for flow problems in water resources and fluid engineering. His research encompasses topics such as lattice Boltzmann methods, high-resolution Riemann solvers, Cartesian cut-cell methods, and pressure correction methods (SIMPLE, SIMPLER, and SIMPLC). Many of his research have been applied to hydraulic, civil, coastal, and environmental engineering challenges, including water pollution, mass transport, morphodynamic evolution, and wave overtopping. For example, hi developed surface gradient method for solving the shallow water equations has been adopted worldwide, and his pioneering research monograph, Lattice Boltzmann Methods for Shallow Water Flows, is widely used in research and engineering both nationally and internationally.
